An erection occurs when the nervous system activates a rapid increase in blood flow. The vascular muscle in the spongy area becomes filled with blood and the outflow of blood is cut off. Numerous sexual stimulants are processed by the brain and transmitted to the penis via the nervous system.

In order to increase the size of an erection, there must be an increase in blood flow and, at the same time, the blood has to be prevented from leaving the penis.

The first one may be translated as "cave-like body" and its structure and function are similar to those of the clitoris. It is formed from two parts that lie from the pubic bones to the head of the penis where they join. Their tissue contains blood-filled spaces connected by tissue septa.

The latter, Corpus Spongiosum is the small part from the bottom of the penis, which contains the urethra.

Sometimes, the released nitric oxide leads to the the relaxation of muscles in the two penile parts and theisr ticcues fill with blood. A small part of it is taken by Corpus spongiosum, and almost 90% by Corpora Cavernosa, the result being an increase in both length and diameter of penis. What Corpus Spongiosum does is to prevent the urethra to compress while the penis is in erection.

There is a drainage system of veins around the outside wall of Corpus Cavernosum that permits blood to leave the erectile tissue. Due to the expanding tissue that press against tunica albuginea, blood cannot leave Corpus Cavernosum, and the penis becomes hard. Tunica albuginea is very thin in glans penis, therefore, this part is more malleable while erection.

My penis is numb during sex. Very little sensitivity. Difficult to achieve climax. It's been this way for about 3 years. What is not working? Is it one thing or a few that could be the culprit?

That can depend on many things.  Is there accompanying swelling?  Is there a discharge that's causing the closure?  Do you know what may have caused this to happen?
